ArchivalResource

Poetical miscellany [manuscript], ca. 1773-1806.

Contains an enormous number of poems, epigrams, epitaphs, inscriptions, and riddles. Few are identified with an author's name; those which are, are by obscure or unknown persons. On pages 28-32 is an "Ode on the withes & fairys of Shakespeare," by a Mr. Lawrence of Winchester [i.e. Laurence French]. The contents are not in strict chronological sequence, but the dates generally increase, and there is evidence (chiefly in the handwriting) that the compilation extended over many years. On p. 1 is an "Ode to Miss Linley now Mrs. Sheridan," whose marriage was in 1773; the last date found is 1806.

155 leaves ; 33 x 20 cm.
